Book Review: Servant Leadership
SERVANT LEADERSHIP
“Servant leaders are called to expand themselves for the sake of those they serve”(pg.14). This book is made for the servants who are striving to serve and be more like Jesus. That’s why this book gives us the nourishment and knowledge on how to become a servant, from knowing who we are, how we do the service that we have, to having a model of a servant leadership from the saints.
“To be a servant is a great call and privilege from God.”(pg. 6) When we are called to serve, the first thing that comes to our mind is “ Do I deserve the service that the Lord has given to me?”
“ Is this service really meant for me?” “ Am I capable to serve” just like how Moses doubted himself when the Lord called him. However, Moses made a decision that made his life even more meaningful, “Moses had many ups and downs in his life” but this did not hinder him in serving the Lord even if other people did not believe in him.
To love Him is to obey Him, in this book we are called to be servant leaders. This book gives such an important role for our lives as servant leaders. It made me think of who I am as a servant. If i am really doing my service just because of God? Or am I doing my service just because that is what they told me to do? I am doing the same thing Martha did when Jesus came to them.
This book made me check on how I am as a servant. Being Martha is not bad as we know, just like on what best I want for my services and do good just to prove to God how much I love Him , but doing more than being is not what Jesus tells us to do. Yes, Jesus wants us to be obedient to Him, but sometimes doing nothing and just listening to Him is more than enough and that is what Mary did. The act or doing of something, especially for Him, is not a bad thing, but sometimes it becomes one of the obstacles or hindrances to seeing what the Lord gives and shows. We are called to be a servant not because the Lord needs us, but because we need God.
As we are being servant leaders, the Lord calls us to be more rooted in Him, to cling to God more and to be more dependent on Him. As servant leaders, saying yes to the call is not easy but as we say the word “yes,” the Lord will give us means to fulfill our yes in every service that He calls us to do. When we say yes to the call of God do we really accept the fact that we can be humiliated by doing things for others? that people can find it hard to understand the things that we do for them? That is why the Lord has been calling to us to be more rooted in Him and to make our world centred in Him, no other than Him. As we become more rooted in Him, God doesn’t call a servant who is ready for being a leader, but He calls the servants who have a heart of willingness to be a servant just like what Jesus did.
