One of the many Bible characters that inspire me in my life as a missionary is Job. The Lord abundantly gave him all that he needed and wanted. He was tested and eventually lost everyone and everything that matters to him, yet He remained close to God.
Taking everything that Job cares for, he could simply turn his back on God. In his roller coaster of emotions, he decided to see what is beyond his sufferings. Job’s response is also a challenge to us to see what is good in the chaos.
- Humble ourselves before God
The very fact that we are just humans, we always need God. Like Job, we cannot comprehend the complexity of every situation that comes along our way. The only thing that Job is sure of, God speaks to him in the most unfamiliar situations and on most ordinary days. It is for us to surrender what we are not capable of to the Lord.
- Trust in God’s wisdom
Even in his trials, Job believes that God can do all things and nothing can hinder His great plans in our lives. Job’s closest friends tell him God is unfair to him; yet, he is certain that God is wise and just. The Lord knows exactly every detail of what He is doing. In our sufferings, may we choose to have a heart like Job who praise God still even in the most difficult situation.
- Seeking the good in the chaos
The Lord answered Job through a storm. Storm symbolizes hardship; but in this way, God made Job see how grand the world is. It is through the hardest of things that the Lord proves how every suffering is worth the bravery of heart to always stand up from every fall.
What I cannot see, teach me (Job 34:32)
The shakes in our life are not meant to punish us. Job never learned why he suffered but he remained hopeful that God will make him through it. God restored the prosperity of Job and doubled everything that he lost. The story of Job affirms us to be hopeful and grateful for the things that God has in store for us. We remain in God not because of what He can give, but because of who He is.
