In Cool Catholics, The Spotlight

There’s something about Christmas that excites the heart. For some it may be hearing Christmas Carols blare all day and all night, for some it may be the amount of presents under the Christmas tree. Blinking lights, Noche Buena, family reunions…name whatever excites you when Christmas comes to mind. But more than anything else, we should be reminded that all the things that excite us should come from one solid reason: Christ, the child, was born.

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Christmas is actually the mystery of “the marvelous exchange”: “God, our Creator, has become man, born of the Virgin Mary. We have been made sharers in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share our humanity.” God could have chosen to stay wherever He is, simply watching over us; but He chose to LIVE like us that we may realize that He understands whatever is going on with our lives because He has experienced it.

Our response? The CCC further says, “Only when Christ is formed in us will the mystery of Christmas be fulfilled in us.” It is only when we live lives imitating Christ that we may experience fully the essence of Christmas. So Christmas is actually a chance for change! A chance for us to share Christ’s holiness by living holy lives!

This Christmas, let not the gifts, carols nor the blinking lights be the focus of our excitement. Rather, may we be excited to start anew by living lives of holiness, just like Christ did. May we be excited that the reason for the season, Christ, has come to our midst.
