The Prophet…

  • The name “Isaias” means “Yahweh is salvation”
  • The greatest of the literary prophets
  • Son of Amoz (not the prophet)
  • Born about 760 B.C. in Jerusalem
  • Belonged to one of the best families in Jerusalem
  • About twenty years of age when he began his public ministry
  • Married a woman, whom he referred to as the “prophetess”
  • Had two sons, She’ar-Yashub, meaning “a remnant will return”, and Maher-shalal-hash-baz, meaning “quick prey”
  • The majesty, holiness, and glory of the Lord took possession of his spirit, and conversely, he gained a new awareness of human pettiness and sinfulness
  • Only the purifying coal of the seraphim could cleanse his lips and prepare him for acceptance of the call: “Here I am, send me!”
